You want to move to Australia. There’s just one fairly significant thing missing:

You don’t have a job there.

So, does that kill the Australian dream before it’s even started?

Not necessarily.

One of the biggest misconceptions about moving to Australia is that you need to secure an Australian job before you can even start looking at your options.

The reality is that Australia has a range of visa pathways, and while some involve an employer, others work very differently.

So before you start firing off 200 applications on Seek from the other side of the world, here’s the bigger picture.

A job offer and a visa are two different things

This is probably the most important thing to understand.

Getting a job in Australia doesn't automatically give you the right to live and work there — but equally, not having a job offer doesn't automatically mean Australia is off the table.

Australia's migration system includes a mix of skilled, employer-sponsored, state or territory nominated, regional, family and temporary visa pathways.

Some involve an employer. Some don't.

Which ones might be relevant depends on things like your age, occupation, qualifications, work experience, English ability and personal circumstances.

In other words: “Do I have an Australian job?” is only one piece of a much bigger puzzle.

What about skilled migration?

This is where things get interesting.

Australia has skilled migration pathways that aren't necessarily based around having one particular Australian employer waiting for you.

Depending on the visa, things such as your occupation, skills assessment, points, state or territory nomination and other eligibility requirements may come into play.

Australian businesses can, in certain circumstances, sponsor overseas workers for temporary or permanent skilled roles.

But sponsorship isn't simply a boss saying, “Sure, we'd love to keep you.”

There are requirements for both the employer and the worker, and different sponsored visa pathways operate differently.

So if you're applying for Australian jobs from overseas, it's worth understanding that “visa sponsorship available” means something quite different from a normal job offer.

What should I figure out first?

Before obsessing over getting an Australian job offer, zoom out.

Start by understanding where you potentially fit into the Australian migration landscape.

Your occupation matters. Your qualifications may matter. Your work experience may matter. Your age can matter. Your English ability can matter. And depending on the pathway, where in Australia you're willing to live may matter too.

That's why two people with seemingly similar careers can have completely different options.

Don't build the whole plan around assumptions

This is the bit we see all the time.

Someone assumes they need sponsorship, so they only apply for sponsored jobs.

Someone else assumes their occupation isn't useful in Australia, so they give up.

Another person spends months planning a move around a visa they've read about online — only to later discover that their circumstances don't fit the requirements.

Do the research before you build the plan.

Australia might be possible without a job offer.

It might require an employer.

Or there might be another pathway entirely.

The important thing is figuring out which question you actually need answered.

Start with the map, then plan the adventure

Moving countries is a big project. You don't need to have every answer on day one.

You just need to know where to start.
